Introduction

Liberia, a nation with a unique historical narrative, was founded in the early 19th century when freed slaves from the United States began settling in the region in 1822. This migration culminated in the establishment of a republic in 1847, making Liberia one of the first independent republics in Africa. However, the country has faced significant challenges, including a military coup in 1980 that initiated a prolonged period of authoritarian governance, followed by a devastating civil war that lasted until 2003. The subsequent peace agreement paved the way for democratic elections in 2005, marking a hopeful turn in Liberia's tumultuous history.
